Discover Diverse Interment Options in Lubbock County

The diverse interment options in Lubbock County cater to various preferences and needs, ensuring families can choose a method that best honors their loved ones while aligning with their values and traditions. Common types of burials include:

Mausoleums: Mausoleums are above-ground structures that house casketed remains. They come in two main types: community mausoleums, which are shared by multiple families, and private mausoleums, which are exclusive to a single family. Mausoleums offer several personalization options, including plaques, carvings, and flower vases. They protect remains from the elements and provide a dignified and lasting memorial space.

Lawn Crypts: Lawn crypts are underground structures similar to mausoleums but located below ground. They are typically modular units made of concrete, which provides a strong barrier against soil pressure and environmental elements. These crypts often feature a drainage system designed to manage water infiltration. Since concrete is a porous material, the drainage system consists of weep holes, perforated pipes, and gravel or aggregate layers that channel water out once the surrounding soil dries and draws it away. Although lawn crypts do not completely keep water out, they offer a strong concrete barrier against soil pressure compared to a casket buried directly in the ground with no additional structural support. Highest Level of Protection

Burial Vaults: Burial vaults are protective containers that enclose a casket, providing structural integrity to the grave and preventing the ground from sinking over time. They are usually made of concrete and come with a sealing mechanism that prevents water and soil from entering. Vaults offer additional protection for the casket against environmental elements and heavy machinery used in cemetery maintenance. Substantial Level of Protection

Concrete Boxes: Concrete boxes are structures made of concrete that surround the casket. They assist in maintaining the integrity of the grave by withstanding the pressure created by the weight of the soil and heavy machinery used in cemetery maintenance. While less expensive than vaults, concrete boxes still offer significant protection and are a common choice for traditional burials. Basic Protection Level

Which is the better choice in preventing the penetration of earth elements?

Each option provides varying levels of protection and durability to suit different needs and budgets. Lawn crypts are ideal for those seeking maximum protection and family interment options. Burial vaults offer a balance of protection, and aesthetic appeal, while concrete boxes are a cost-effective choice for basic protection from the elements.

Customs of Culture and Faith in the Lubbock Community

At Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers our experience with and understanding of diverse customs and traditions sets us apart. We have become familiar with many of the customs in our community and are here to help families incorporate their choices.

Jewish Customs: Jewish graveside services are distinct and deeply rooted in tradition, emphasizing simplicity and respect for the deceased. At a Jewish graveside service, it is customary for family members and friends to participate in the burial by placing soil on the casket once it has been lowered into the grave. This act, known as "Kevurah," symbolizes the individual's return to the earth and serves as a final mitzvah (good deed) performed for the deceased. It is a deeply significant ritual, representing the closure of the physical journey of the deceased. It is also customary to place small stones on the grave as a sign of respect and remembrance.

Christian Customs: Christian graveside services typically involve a short ceremony that includes prayers, scripture readings, and a final blessing. Flowers are commonly placed on the grave and gifts like garden stones or wind chimes might be given to the family. In some Christian traditions, especially during Catholic and Eastern Orthodox funerals, it is common for the officiant to sprinkle holy water on the casket. In addition, mourners might place a handful of soil on the casket. This act symbolizes the biblical phrase "ashes to ashes, dust to dust," emphasizing the belief in the resurrection and the cycle of life and death.
Muslim Customs: Muslim graveside services are characterized by their simplicity and adherence to Islamic law. It is common for family members to place soil into the grave after the body has been placed inside. Male relatives usually perform this act and symbolize the return of the body to the earth, in accordance with Islamic beliefs about the natural cycle of life and death. It is seen as a final act of service to the deceased.
